George Lloyd: Symphonies Nos. 7 & 9

A new composer for me. Of course I've been aware of him for years, and knew his music would probably be to my taste, so I don't know why it's taken me so long to get to it. Good timing though, now that all his symphonies are finally available in 2 handy box sets! I'm certainly liking what I'm hearing so far.

Step forward! Benjamin Frankel (31 January 1906 – 12 February 1973). I put on his Symphony No 2 last night with a view to a possible charity shop drop and found myself instead, beguiled by lush, almost late romantic orchestration with colourful touches of instrumentation  and long moments of stillness including the haunting chiming of bells. Funnily enough,I can remember being sent a cassette of off-air tapes of Frankel by an enthusiast many years ago. I can only imagine his astonishment and delight when, some years later, cpo released a complete cycle;though,I've got to admit I wasn't too excited by them at the time, but being a polite person I told him I loved them! (The sound quality of the recordings DID NOT help). I'm going to have to listen some more now!

Maybe I should give Frankel a go? Twelve tone music has never done much for me, I tend to agree with the composer I'm listening to right now: "I thought it was a ****-eyed idea that produced horrible sounds" (George Lloyd). Maybe this would be a good entry point though?

Great stuff & glad to 'see' you back here Mountain Goat! It would be nice if Lyrita were to follow this up at some point with the oratorio "St.Peter" by Daniel Jones (1962) which is available in the uploads of broadcast recordings here in good quality sound;but an official release would make it more widely available, and with all the trimmings (a nice booklet). And following the release of Grace Williams opera,The Parlour;what about Daniel Jones 1961 opera "The Knife"produced by the New Opera Company at Sadlers Wells in 1963 or his one act opera,Orestes, broadcast by the BBC in 1968 (Did Richard Itter catch that?) but has yet to be staged;but I'm being greedy now aren't I?! ;D

Well sometimes it's good to dream  ;D Regarding Daniel Jones, now that they've done all the symphonies, I though Lyrita were going to release the concertos? Unless I've missed something, all seems to have gone quiet on that front.

Great to be here btw, now that the "old" forum has become the linguistics and old train tickets forum!  ::)

Grace Williams: Missa Cambrensis. The CD arrived today, and it's been great to hear this again after 9 years!

I have not (yet) heard any music by David Wynne, so another one to add to my list! In the late 90s/early 2000s the Cardiff University orchestra did consider performing his unfinished 4th symphony, but it never seems to have happened. Nothing was ever advertised and I only know about this because I mistakenly received an email about it intended for someone at the music department with a similar name to me!

That's great news! I have just ordered the CD (together with some Ruth Gipps and George Lloyd). It is a different performance though, as the conductor and soloists are different from the allegedly "unreleasable" 2016 performance.  I was at that concert, and remember the announcement at the start that one of the soloists had laringytis and to "please excuse any flaws in his singing". It sounded fine to me, but clearly someone disagreed. In any case, regardless of which performance it is, it's great to finally have this fantastic work on CD.

Life has been busy for the last few years and I haven't had much time to hang aroud on forums, but I do like to drop in every so often. It was a bit of a shock to find recently that a forum I occasionally frequented has now been taken over by one member who does nothing but pontificate to himself about such fascinating topics as his collection of old train tickets! So I'm very pleased to have found this one where I recognise a few familiar names :)
