Yet another email of releases from Toccata this morning, with it not on. They do at least put out lists of releases often, unlike Dutton.

The Mackerras performance was very good of GL, so perhaps could be released on CD. But I still remain unconvinced of the work. Part of me feels that S had been just a bit too long at the Savoy and had lost the sureness of touch that he had had when he did Light of the World and Martyr. I listen to those two works much more often: Light probably three or four times a month and Martyr maybe twice. GL gets dusted down every six months or so.

Oh, well thanks for letting us know!

Can't wait for this. Brian didn't often choose English literature as his subject (the only other big work that did was of course also Shelley, Prometheus Unbound), so it will be interesting to see how he tackles it. Yeah, on to Turandot! To the Divan!

It's a magnificent release. Brian's operas were the big gap after the symphonies were all recorded safely. Now we are heading to closing that gap. Toccata are releasing The Cenci soon (when?) and there are plans to release the BBC Agamemnon on disc, so all eyes will turn to fictional China for that heartless Princess and Brian's other common subject with Busoni, Turandot.

From what I heard recently, the next plan is for "The Chieftain", which admittedly is in need of a decent recording, so I suspect Martyr will be 2024. It's a shame, as I want to hear it done really well so very much. I suspect it may be Sullivan's best choral work, or perhaps his best work overall.

They are supposed to be releasing Havergal Brian's "The Cenci" this year, but I'm still waiting. This will mean that only Turandot remains unavailable to listen to in toto.

The 1906 Birmingham would have been my all time favourite. The Kingdom, Omar Khayyam, Part 1 (which is a lot of Omar Khayyam and The Bells. Can you imagine anything as wonderful happening these days?
