Individual composers / British composers
« on: August 07, 2022, 02:44:22 pm »
Ladies/Gentlemen:

Lovely to see British 19-20thC composers getting plenty of exposure.
Were it not for the likes of Alwyn, Bax, Bantock, Bliss, Delius, Parry...+ a good few...I would never, 12-15 years ago, have started out on the road that has led to a 'hobby' which will easily see me to my grave !
It was from there that I ventured to try some of the Scandinavians/'Lowlanders'...Gade, Diepenbrock, Holmboe, Rangstrom, Ysaye + so many others, that have eventually led to the collection that, despite my own lack of musical scholarship (yes, you may be surprised to hear I DO have some elsewhere !), is my very best reason for 'carrying on'.
What's the point of this post ?
Well...am venturing to try (for the first time on-line) some uploads - you may have looked at their titles in the 'Downloads' section & thought 'what a prat'...& of course on many levels you'd probably be right.
Only remotely worthwhile response - please don't assume 'Oh, heard of him/her..(s)he's good'. So are some of the other guys/gals...partly 'wrong place, wrong time' - partly just so little chance for anyone, however brilliant, to get a 'major' concert performance nowadays - ONLY modern piece I seem to see regularly on concert programmes is Berg Violin Concerto 'Dem Andenken eines Engels'...which won't make my own favourites' list at all .
Do give the 'jazz classics'/'far eastern classics' a look....& a polite comment !
Never know - you could be pleasantly surprised, & if you're not...you're in luck, as without any interest in them I shan't trouble you further !

Mmm...afraid am just creating the wrong impression, & writing at cross-purposes with a member.
Forget this idea was mentioned.

Think you've probably made a whole harvest of hay, Kevin; but hey (OK, not subtle !) if it provides pieces that members don't know & might like to, surely that's a large part of the basis for this forum.
Good on you, Sir. Have a great break !

There's a suggestion from Mr. Albion, on the 'jazz music' thread started by Mr. Hibbard, that a 'jazz inspired' section in Downloads might be worth having.
Personally, I don't mind jazz, but afraid the people mentioned in Mr. Hibbard's latest posts on that thread mean nothing to me - PLEASE, that is not intended as an insult to them or Mr. Hibbard...just a fact as I see it.
Now I'd like such a 'classical jazz' thread, & have probably 100+ jazz-influenced classical works amongst my downloads. But;
 a) not sure how many of them qualify for inclusion on a Forum, in so far as most such works, being more recent, may be on current CDs, or somehow protected,
 b) by putting in something like 'jazz concerto' on YouTube, a good few works are openly diplayed there for people who are remotely interested.

So, before trawling my selection for what's 'legal' & initiating such a thread, is it, frankly, worthwhile in members' opinion ?
Be honest but, preferably, reasonably polite !

There's a complete site for Stabat Mater compositions - no, it doesn't claim to include everything ever written (I could add a few myself) but it's a pretty good starting point.

https://stabatmater.info/

Recently heard the Stanford Requiem in Birmingham. He's quite a composer, not least if you love sacred works !

Some sounds maybe...less than lovely - but some pretty good ! Thanks indeed.

Indeed - great !

I've a huge amount of time for De Meij...his Symphony no. 4 is among my top 100 - but I didn't even know this work had been premiered.
The joys of a Forum of experts !

Assuming Mr. Albion agrees...entirely up to you, Sir.
Will, for what little it's worth, make my position clear. This Forum's title is Music For Everyone...which perhaps tends to imply that any genre of music will be welcome - do hope not, as that would be a good time to leave.

Amongst my classical-based downloads, I very happily have well over 100 jazz-inspired/dominated pieces, including 'jazz saxophone concerto', 'jazz magnificat', 'jazz harpsichord concerto', 'jazz mass', 'jazz ballet'...++.

While if 'regular' jazz is playing in a bar/restaurant etc. it would be a whole lot preferable to hip-hop/rap etc., there are, surely, jazz Forums on-line where those who know can get away from those who don't.
I 'don't', & have joined this Forum as one of relatively few for those who DO with classical music.

Sorry, Mr. Hibbard - nothing at all personal in this. Presumably 'everyone's' view is welcome !

Fridrich Bruk - Symphonies 19,20,21.

And waiting for the appearance of 22,23 !        Always very listenable !

A rarity indeed, this, as his website, & YouTube, offer nothing else whatever besides film scores.
Not that there's anything wrong with much film (and nowadays game) music - been staggered particularly in recent years by the quality of much Japanese composition for these 'genres'.
We're all, of course, aware of many composers, perhaps known principally for traditional classical work, who've scored for films etc. with great effect.
Am always happy - and hoping for some inspiration here - to find composers who've rather done it the other way round; celebrity for film (etc.) work rather obscuring their ability with 'conventional' classical pieces. When I was very 'green' in research into music, was amazed to discover that John Williams had so many concerti etc. to his name - perhaps he's the most obvious of all.
Who else, rather lesser celebrated maybe, would colleagues put forward - those like Mr. Aaltio, whose very first purely classical work this seems to be ?

Miscellaneous / Re: Best CD Walkman
« on: July 28, 2022, 10:14:26 am »
So - the case of wine I sent round doesn't count as commission, then ?
OK - not true: what does seem to be true is Mr. Albion's opinion of the Discman.
Not a lot of current devices bother to include a CD player feature, but for music on the move (or to take on a trip for a few nights), easy to slip the KLIM & half a dozen CDs in the overnight bag (can of course be played in the car...if you have one - no, not for 7 years) .
And you can indeed forget most of the pretty buttons, & the incomprehensible (to an IT idiot) instructions on how to use them all.
Thus far, my little Sony Walkman has (surprisingly) been the best £40 or so ever spent on a music player. This may well run it quite close !

Well, Mr. Albion, the Klim discman that is reponsible for my discovery of this Forum has now arrived.
With my normal aptitude for matters IT, will almost certainly have broken/mastered it by the end on the month (didn't, however, specify which month!).
Whether it ever works or not, am very grateful for BritishComposer on AMF steering me across here - of course you & the other members may be less chuffed !

Will just mention again here - if anyone can give this technical moron a 'Posting for Dummies Lesson 001', just possibly I can contribute a few 'legal'(?) items to the Forum in the time ahead, rather than just sponging & making feeble jokes.

Other violin & horn concerti ? Ah, not much success there.
From my collection, there's Brasilian Miguel Kertsman's Concerto for violin, horn, shofar & orchestra...& how about a 'cheat', with Gordon Crosse's concerto for viola & strings with French horn ?
Telemann does have a concerto for violin, 3 horns & (small !) orchestra - maybe there are more from those times ?
Best I can do - over to others !

Tried to choose some pieces that can definitely be found on YouTube (if anyone's remotely interested in trying !):

Elias(Brian)GBR - 'Doubles', 'Laments', '5 Songs to poems by Irina Ratushinskaya'
Hoffman(Joel)CAN - Cello Concerto 'Self Portrait with Gebirtig'
Kanno(Yugo)JPN - Saxophone Concerto 'Mystic Forest'.
