Broadcasts and concerts / Re: Stanley Bate Symphony 2 Première

I understand that Dutton may be issuing it, with Martin Yates

A rather belated post re the above - did you acquire the second volume (the only one I would be interested in) and, if so, what did you think of it?  Reviews I have read elsewhere seem positive, but I would value your input.

Broadcasts and concerts / Stanley Bate Symphony 2 Première
« on: February 27, 2025, 01:19:16 pm »
Great news - Bate’s 2nd Symphony will have its world première performance at the English Music Festival in Dorchester on 23rd May.
A lot of other desirable but otherwise unheard things are also scheduled.

Listening to the short excerpts at Presto, I am more convinced than ever that this is a must buy.

Full details are on Presto's site, but only a download is mentioned at present - hopefully not too long a wait to the cd

Individual composers / Re: John Henry Felix Borowski

Does it matter whether he is considered English or American? - it is the music that is important.
You may be interested to know that his Piano Concerto, apparently not performed for over 100 years, is being performed in October by the Saratoga Symphony Orchestra, with pianist Dan Glover.
It is possible that the performance will be recorded, so we may get to hear it . . .

Of Symphony 4, that is

Any more news about a recording?

PS: I have no connection whatever with Lewis Foreman or Dutton Vocalion - I just think that the book is deserving of as wide a readership as possible.

This has just been published by Vocalion Books (part of Dutton), and my copy arrived at my local bookshop today. It is subtitled ‘A personal history of fifty years researching and recording neglected repertoire’.
Over 400 pages plus many colour and black and white photos, this promises to be an essential read for anyone and everyone interested in British music of the neglected variety (ie: most of it!).
I have only had time so far to flick through it, but can see that it will keep me occupied for some time to come, and the very name Lewis Foreman guarantees a detailed well-researched and interesting book.
Buy it!

Individual composers / Re: Ruth Gipps - Symphony No. 1

Good news indeed! And thanks for recording it, as it will fill a gap until Chandos issue the recording commercially.
Any idea of what might complete the disc?

New and forthcoming releases / British Piano Concertos
« on: July 11, 2023, 07:55:21 am »
Great news - Lyrita is issuing a second volume of British Piano Concertos played by Simon Callaghan - including the early Rubbra PC I mentioned in an old post on the AMF forum (in the days when it was concerned with music).
Sound samples are available on Presto’s site.
The other works are Gordon Jacob’s PC 2 and John Addison’s Variations, and due out on 1 September.

Potentially bad news - Hyperion has apparently been sold to Universal Music
