Lionel, I would recommend listening to Scott‘s first symphony again. It‘s such a charming romantic piece!
Around 1900 Grainger, Scott and O‘Neill sounded very similar I think. Maybe this has something to do with the Frankfurt connection?

Hello!
It‘s very silent here recently but I cannot complain because I am one of the silent lurkers myself. ;)

Broadcasts and concerts / Holbooke and Madsen Trios
« on: March 15, 2025, 01:44:20 pm »
Tomorrow, Sunday 16 March, members of the Osnabrücker Sinfonieorchester will give a chamber concert. Two horn trios are programmed, one by the contemporary Norwegian composer Trygve Madsen and the Horn Trio Op 28 by Joseph Holbrooke. I will not be able to visit but I thought some of you just would like to know about this rare occasion.

Perhaps a distant relative of Sir Edward Montague Compton Mackenzie? ;)

A Happy Christmas to all!

I wasn‘t aware that the original version of Arnold Bax‘s Christmas Eve has been performed in 2009 by the BBC SO under David Parry. Here is the YouTube link:

New and forthcoming releases / Gustav Holst - The Vision of Dame Christian
« on: December 22, 2024, 06:37:31 pm »
EM-Records has released an exciting new Holst disc with some first recordings. We have an old broadcast recording of The Vision of Dame Christian. It‘s not one of Holst‘s major achievements but a fresh recording helps to assess the work better.

Dear members,

I just noticed this resource which will certainly find resonance with you:

https://www.britishmusicsociety.co.uk/2024/05/series-unearths-scores-from-the-past/

The English Heritage Music Series, an initiative presented by the University of Minnesota’s Library Publishing Services, now offers free access to musical compositions previously out of reach or long out of print.

Apart from full scores you will find downloadable midi realisations and a few audios of recent live performances.

New and forthcoming releases / Robin Milford Organ Works
« on: December 29, 2022, 10:07:09 pm »
Dear members,

This day, 63 years ago, Robin Milford died. His talent was not as great as that of his contemporaries Britten and Tippett. He was a gentle but troubled person but his music seldom shows signs of it. Despite bouts of depression he was able to sustain his inspiration to the end. His early songs are wonderful samples of English art song, admired by Finzi. Another champion of his talent was RVW to whom Milford‘s music epitomised the essence of English music.
His organ works are fine examples of the English cathedral tradition. These are not shattering, awe-inspiring pieces but lovely, perfectly worked-out miniatures and voluntaries to adorn a contemplative evensong service.

Priory records has specialised in choral and organ music and this is their recent release of selected Robin Milford‘s organ works:

There has been an earlier privately released CD by the late Andrew Seivewright but this is the first commercial all-Milford album of his organ music. Many seasonal gems among them to prolong the spirit of Christmas! 😀

Thank you so much for recording and editing these pieces, Kevin!
I know from own experience what a laborious and time consuming task it is. And I very much appreciate your inclusion of intro material as well.👍

Individual composers / Re: Polovinkin, Leonid (1894-1949, Russia)

Chris, thank you so much for these posts! They are greatly appreciated and hopefully members will explore...

 :)

Difficult to tell really...

Christopher, I am mighty thankful for your uploads. Many of these composers have interested me for a long time but recordings were very rare. Zhivotov was almost exclusively known by his nonet fragments. I am not sure when I will find the time to explore these finds but I just wanted to drop a short thanks!😀👍

These are substantial quartets and well worth investigating. The recordings are by "Steve's Bedroom Band" and were contributed to IMSLP: these are synthesised but are excellently accomplished, and the only way to hear these works.

Steve Jones once explained that he recorded all these IMSLP uploads singlehandedly with his own violin. He even played the cello parts on violin and transposed it down after recording it with his software. So there is only a minimal amount of "synthetics" in it. I don't think that we will ever see a commercial recording of the Macfarren quartets so we owe Steve a great debt!  :)

I remember an interview with Celibidache. The journalist expressed an interest in Celi‘s own compositions which he hadn‘t heard. „How can you be curious about something which you don‘t know?“ Celi answered. He told him to listen to Mozart (or some of the classics) instead and be happy. 😉

Und back to Frau Gipps, dumbkof! Jawohl! ::) ;D (AH)

I think we are in dire need of a linguistics section! 🧐😂
The correct spelling is „Dummkopf“.
I am 47 and I cannot remember having heard the expression „Jawohl!“ used by a living person. Perhaps I frequent the wrong locations. 😁
If you are looking for a popular expression used by every German at any time: it‘s „F*ck!“ 😜
