The truly splendid Johann Strauss II Edition on Marco Polo/ Naxos. Light music of sheer genius...

This is great fun. I remember standing in the arena at the Royal Albert Hall when they did the whole one-act opera (all 110 minutes of it) at the Proms many years ago, By the end my feet had turned to stone. This is a great way to listen to some of the best bits without the interminable screeching.

Will this pleasure never end? Now it's Alfred Cellier's 1886 comic opera "Dorothy" which ran for 931 performances, which seriously made Arthur Sullivan anxious since "The Mikado" ran for 672. Oops! He needn't have worried since "Dorothy" was largely forgotten until this recent excellent recording:

Now on to one of my favourites - Franz Liszt! Would you believe it? Some call his larger works "vulgar trash", but then this may well describe me. This is the fantastic comprehensive orchestral set (now on Warner) conducted by Kurt Masur:

I always love recordings where the harp is prominently heard as it is here: so often it is recessed in the background.

When I saw "Handel" I was expecting a reference to Water Music. Or, if curried sprouts had been on last night's dinner menu, Royal Fireworks. :D

Lol.

I once heard on Radio 3's Essential Classics "And now we're going to play some Scheidt" which they promptly did. What a pity the announcement wasn't followed by Stockhausen...

You've got them...........WHERE?!! :o

I hope they're well shielded! I'd be afraid I might miss!!!! :o ;D

A bit smaller now! Some people might wonder just what kind of forum they've logged onto?!! :o ;D
I must admit,I used to keep my Time Out Film Guide next to mine. Until it all fell to bits (The Time Out Guide not the loo! ;D)

How about some Ludvig Schytte or Samuel Scheidt?

 :D :D :D

Listening to the gorgeous symphonies of Kurt Atterberg in the excellent complete set on CPO. These are splendidly colourful and tuneful works which deserve to be much more widely known and appreciated...

The new Coleridge-Taylor disc with "Toussaint L'Ouverture" was very positively referenced on today's Radio 3 "Record Review"...

I had considerable involvement with this CD "from soup to nuts" as it were, since I recommended the five-movement suite to Mike Repper for inclusion, and so I feel  a little self-conscious making this post but I'm sure members will be pleased to note that the album hit the streets on Friday, and that it is freely available for streaming on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5a0_g6lprY&list=OLAK5uy_n20aqKWqlF38ZGoWzA62NoOmBwOQsyALo The only thing you'll be missing is my brilliant booklet note  ;) and other words of wisdom from Mike Repper and violinist Curtis Stewart. The only way to get that is to buy the album or stream it on one of the subscription services such as Qobuz! It's worth it, trust me!

Lionel, thank you so much for this. It is a wonderful disc and can only serve to enhance Coleridge-Taylor's reputation as a composer on a large scale with a highly distinctive voice (i.e. NOT the British Dvorak). You (and the late Patrick Meadows) deserve great credit for bringing this music back to life. "Toussaint L'Ouverture" stands out in particular but it is all worthwhile. Any more projects in the pipeline? You did mention "Zara's Earrings" (aka "Bab's Bangles")...

All seven of Stanford's symphonies in the wonderful series conducted by the much-missed David Lloyd Jones on Naxos. Although the composer did not ascribe opus numbers to the first two they are far from negligible and don't put a foot wrong. Lovely stuff, especially 4, 5 and 6.

Oh,good! As they say in Journey into Space,"Whacko!" It's good to see you post here again,Albion. I'm hoping your health will allow you to post more. British music needs your kind of enthusiasm
It's good to see cpo continuing their Cipriani Potter series although I feel like a hypocrite in admitting that I won't be buying it in the immediate future*. That said,I'm hoping I'll be able to see the back of sardines for dinner in the next couple of months at which point I will be stocking up! There have been so many interesting releases;all that's missing is some more Holbrooke! ("Please cpo,can I 'ave some more?!!")

* in other words I am! ::) ;D

I would love them to tackle the major Holbrooke choral works "Queen Mab", "The Bells" and the "Dramatic Choral Symphony: Homage to Poe". These days, German choirs have an impeccable command of the English language so that should not prevent recordings. And thanks for enquiring into my health. I've recently had a stroke and a heart attack but somehow seem to keep plodding on. Please continue to keep posting on any random subject that takes your fancy, including Marmite!
